If you never cared much about non-Lincoln-related IL history (who could blame you) this is a cool place to pop in and begin to learn more. The story of an incredible, industrious, ingenious family seemingly connected to all sorts of IL places, industries and historical figures is well told by their own full-time family historian. Their house is beautiful and historically furnished. Just when you think you're done, you're taken to a giant garage full of rare rocks and it's like a whole second museum. An off beat, off the beaten trail, truly terrific tour that comes as close as any museum to encapsulating the spirit and history of Midwest (at least, post-Native American).
Love love love ...all rock hounds are missing out if you don't go ...a must go! Call ahead and get the tour our guy was awesome , smart , fun and obviously passionate about the collection!! Lots of hands on and experiences you can only have at there!! Wish I could give it more stars!!
Makes a person want to be a geologist! Great tour contradicting what was taught in some textbooks with physical evidence that fossilisation can form so much quicker that we know. They have detailed soft tissue/inscet fossils ! The Gems were also astonishing !
